Ever since his purchase of Château des Laurets in 2003, Baron Benjamin de Rothschild wanted to reveal the quintessence of this estate special cuvée from the best plots of Merlot. The grapes are picked and sorted by hand, then fermebymaking a ntedwith all the care and attention worthy of a great growth. This rare wine, only produced in the best vintages, reflects all the quality of great Saint-Emilionmade primarily from Merlot – a subtle combination of elegance and character.
THE VINEYARD
SOIL TYPE: Limestoneand clay
AVERAGE AGE OF THE VINES: 70 years
VINE DENSITY: 5 500 vines/ha
PRUNING: This cuvéeis made from several plots located in the highest part of the vineyard that receive special attention during pruning, suckering, bud thinning, green harvesting, etc.
VINE MANAGEMENT: Natural grass cover
HARVEST: Hand-picking at optimum maturity with careful sorting, both in the vineyard and on a mechanical sorting table in the cellar prior to destemming.
HARVEST PERIOD: 15th, 18th, 19th and 20th October2018
THE WINE
WINEMAKING: Cold soaking and ageing in oak vats. Pumping over and pigeage (punching down the cap). Automatic temperaturecontrol and post-fermentation micro-oxygenation during maceration. Malolactic fermentation and ageing in new barrels.
AGEING : 100% new barrels.
AGEING DURATION: 14 months.
PRODUCTION: 20 100 bottles.
TASTING COMMENTS
The robe is a deep black.
The nose reveals a subtle ensemble with notes of truffles and black fruit with an overtone of Morello cherries. Despite being such a young wine, its woody notes meld well to offer a very complex effect.
The palate delivers a powerful wine with excellent length. The wine is taut, elegant. The balance is perfect with silky tannins. Deep black fruit aromas round off this superb fine wine, with the signature freshness of the estate’s greatest terroir. What magnificent persistence in the lingering aromas! Extremely elegant chocolate and liquorice notes resound in the background.
A great bottle with cellaring potential of over 15 years.
