Donnachadh is a small, family-owned vineyard and winery in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA of Santa Barbara County, dedicated to producing cool-climate, organically-farmed Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Gamay Noir.
Donnachadh is the vision of owners Drew and Laurie Duncan, who purchased the 285-acre property with the intention of making wine in the style they preferred to drink: elegant, restrained and refined. They planted a 40 acre vineyard in 2013 and intentionally put quality over quantity to produce the vibrant, balanced wines they desired – wines they hoped would highlight the nuances of this special site. Under the care and expertise of esteemed winemaker Ernst Storm, Donnachadh released its first estate wines in 2016, earning critical acclaim for the inaugural vintage. Since then, Donnachadh has continued to build a reputation for its site-driven wines, praised for their incredible depth and character.
Paying homage to the Duncans’ European heritage, Donnachadh is named after the 4th century Gaelic name ancestral to modern Scottish Clan Duncan, a clan with a rich history marked by adventure and discovery. Generations ago, the Duncans’ ancestors made the journey from Scotland to America in pursuit of a new life. The clan’s crest depicts this era with an image of a dismasted ship in heavy seas, along with the clan’s motto of “Disce Pati,” which means “learn to endure.” Expressing the same spirit of adventure, the Donnachadh label represents the Duncans’ own journey into wine while providing a visual reminder of the ancient and mystical elements of the duo’s Scottish heritage, and the maritime influences so significant to grape growing along the Central Coast.
