98 / 100 : recognized by international critics - James Suckling's score for Cuvée Le Clos des Bachelards, Fleurie AOC
Founded around the year 1100 by the Benedictine monks of Cluny, Château des Bachelards is an exceptional winegrowing estate located in Fleurie, in northern Beaujolais. Covering 12 hectares, including 6 in a single block around the château in Fleurie AOC, the estate also includes plots in Beaujolais Villages, Saint-Amour and Moulin-à-Vent.
Chemical-free since 2007, the Château is triple certified organic (FR-BIO-15) and biodynamic Demeter and Biodyvin. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the region, the estate pays constant attention to respecting its terroir and the ecosystems in its vineyards.
Under the direction of Alexandra de Vazeilles from 2014 to 2022, the Château des Bachelards’ vineyard revealed the grandeur of Beaujolais terroirs. She has since passed the torch to Matthieu Gufflet, a passionate gourmet and wine connoisseur, who relies on the young team in place to perpetuate the estate's excellence.
In less than ten years, Château des Bachelards wines have established themselves as among the finest in France, acclaimed by international critics. Renowned for their long, complex vinification and ageing processes, they embody the perfect alliance between the elegance of Burgundy and the delicacy of the Rhône Valley.
Its approach to organic and biodynamic viticulture makes Château des Bachelards a Terres de Natures signature site :
• Very high density (10,000 vines / ha), low yields.
• Agroforestry and plant cover in the vineyards for ecosystem balance and biodiversity.
• Very old vines under massal selection.
• Meticulous pruning, respecting sap flow to preserve plant heritage.
• Commitment to organic and biodynamic farming, respecting the rhythm of lunar cycles.
• Hand-harvested, gravity-fed.
• Native yeasts only.
• No carbonic maceration or thermovinification.
• Long vatting and gentle extraction methods.
• Aged in amphorae, concrete vats, foudre and demi-muids.
• The only Monopole in Fleurie and one of the few in Beaujolais, along with Le Clos des Bachelards, twice rated 97 and 98/100 by James Suckling.
