The exclusive collection is called Grand Occitan and features three distinct wines, each named after the specific vineyard plot where the grapes are cultivated. The first, Chalamat, is a Syrah-Grenache blend. Tannes is a Cabernet Sauvignon, and the third, a white wine called Grangette, is 100% Chardonnay.
Nestled between land and sea, near the Thau Lagoon and the Mediterranean, Clos Astelia is the jewel in the winemaker’s extensive crown of Languedoc vineyards, known together as Domaines Paul Mas. It is there, on 13 carefully selected hectares between the towns of Montagnac et Villeveyrac, that Jean-Claude Mas uses meticulous sustainable techniques to grow the Viognier, Grenache, Picpoul and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes used to make these exceptional wines.
The winemaker designed Clos Astelia from scratch: “from A to Z”, as he likes to say. As testament to how much he cherishes the project, he chose the name in tribute to his four daughters: Astrid, Elisa, Apolline and Estelle.
Launched in 2018, Clos Astelia features its own state-of-the-art winemaking facility, with a capacity to bottle up to 100,000 bottles on site. Nothing, however, is more important for the winery than the terroir itself.
Chalamat, Tannes, Grangette… each parcel has its own unique attributes, and for Jean-Claude Mas, it is important that the labels of his new wines celebrate that fact. The front of each bottle features the altitude of the specific plot. On the back is an image of the particular topography.
